Petition Title: | Married person tax credit not for migrants? |
Submitted By: | Individual |
Petition Text: | I would like to bring to your attention an injustice with respect to personal tax credits. I am married and working (and paying tax) in the Republic of Ireland. My husband lives, works, and pays tax in Northern Ireland. As a result, I am being taxed as a single person, losing out on €1650 worth of tax credits. This is particularly unjust because working and living in different countries during the week is creating substantial additional costs for us (paying mortgage AND rent, commuting, etc.).
I think this is a problem that affects many families on this island, particularly in the border counties, but also those who have had to emigrate in these difficult economic times in order to find work, leaving their spouses and families behind (as is well known, net outward migration has affected Ireland for several years now).
I would appreciate it if you could address this problem. |
