Name of Petitioner:Mr James O'Carroll
Petition Title:Make the Courts have longer sentences for repeat offenders that commit assault, robbery, and rape
Submitted By:Individual
Petition Text:As a victim of two assaults, I believe that the way criminals are treated are too lenient for them. many criminals have up to 40 or even 60 offenses and only get about a 12 year sentence. which about 4 to 6 years would then be suspended. It is dangerous to have a violent person carry on with their activities with little to no consequence. For a victim to hear that, it is an awful feeling for them. It will make them feel weak and even more helpless to know that their attacker has been free from prison. A recent example of an unjustly short and/or suspended sentences would be of Sean Kenny. This man has had 50 previous convictions including criminal damage, violent behaviour in a garda station and dangerous driving. only after 50 convictions did he get 12 years. If he had a longer sentence in prison, he may have caused less damage to people and property. In conclusion, the courts need to be more assertive when giving sentences to violent criminals, or they will be out again soon repeating their bad deeds. 12 years for 50 convictions is too short. i believe it should be raised to make criminals have 3 years for 2 convictions of assault and/or rape. Victims will feel safer in their homes or while outside. Thank you for your time for reading.
