| Petition Text: | A petition for Ireland to join the Schengen Area for the following reasons:
1. Ireland is already a more open and European-friendly country with having the Euro currency, but if it becomes more open and integrated with Europe it will be more highly respected globally
2. EU citizens could travel to/from Ireland without the need for a passport which would help bring more trade and wealth as many European citizens no longer own passports and therefore only tend to visit other EU countries part of the Schengen
3. Become more independent and stop following the moves/direction of the UK. The UK is becoming increasingly eurosceptic and the way Ireland can differentiate itself is by being more open to Europe to welcome businesses that enjoy our country being the gateway to the rest of the continent
4. Cheaper for Irish citizens as a passport will not be needed to travel across the EU (except Denmark, UK, Bulgaria, Romania) - although the Common Travel Area means no passport is needed for travel to Northern Ireland, there is so much more opportunity to not need a passport to travel across the EU/Schengen
Overall, if Ireland joined the Schengen area, we'd be a more open and accessible country, bringing more trade and wealth, and it will be cheaper for Irish citizens as no passport would be needed to travel the EU (only ID). Ireland already shows its European openness through using the Euro currency, but it should go further and steam ahead without Britain |
