Petition Title: | Public consultation on the feasibility of developing a hemp industry |
Submitted By: | Individual |
Petition Text: | This petition asks that the government undertakes a public consultation process to discover the feasibility of developing a hemp industry. Hemp is already grown here under restriction but to date its potential has been hindered by a number of factors. The development of the hemp industry would help farmers, provide and sustain employment, create valuable research opportunities, potentially help the environment and much more. Submissions should be sought from members of the public, experts, farming organisations and other relevant bodies, businesses and other interested parties. Irish and international research in the area already shows potential in the areas of construction, biomass energy, health foods, textiles and much more. By undertaking a thorough public consultation process the government may come to the conclusion that a domestic hemp industry is worthy of capital investment and promotion. |
