Téacs na hAchainí:Many owner truck drivers cannot afford to tax their vehicles at some €3,500 annually when the availability of work is largely day to day. A simple solution that would allow owners to avail of incoming work would be to introduce a daily fee paid by SMS, EFT or online Debit/Credit transaction. The criteria to qualify for this facility could be based on existing motor tax criteria which would be logged with the authorities. All that would then be required would be an electronic payment to a given number or email address, and in return 24 hour access to the road. Precedent for something similar is already in operation with Dublin Corporation to permit truck access to sensitive areas of the city. More importantly such a facility would be welcomed by hard pressed operators who are refusing employment because the cost of taxing a vehicle for 3,6, or 12 months cannot be justified given the sporadic climate of work available. Equally the same operators would happily pay something extra for a daily rate thus creating a win, win situation for revenue and tax payer. Obviously, many issues can be brought up to counter the practicalities, but if the importance of maintaining employment and supporting SMEs is foremost, this proposal should be given a sympathetic ear. I might also suggest that within this idea there may be opportunity to embrace a wider section of the community of road users. Thanks for the opportunity to present the basics. Kind Regards John Breslin
