Téacs na hAchainí:This petition calls for a blanket reform of Ireland's second level state examinations process. Within Irish secondary schools, the commitment of teaching staff, increasing level of subject choice and the development of a wider understanding of the contrasting learning methods in which students find most effective has made the opportunity to access third level and university education viable to the wider population of second level students. However, the process in which key state examinations are facilitated is one aspect of the Irish education system which has failed to adapt as most people who understand the intensive process of junior and leaving cert would expect it to. The leaving certificate comprises a broad and comprehensive learning process over a two year period only to subsequently demand that that you regurgitate that information over an unacceptably short period of time, in an environment which is intentionally constructed as memory centered, high pressured and excessively time restrictive. Consequently this procedure of examination can not provide an accurate assessment of the academic ability of most second level students. It is critical and necessary that the department of education work in close partnership with the ASTI and other representative bodies to produce a blanket reform of our state examinations system, initiating a gradual transition to a continuous class based assessment (CBA) system, altering the very foundation and nature of second level state examinations. The transition will be fundamental and will naturally attract opposition. As such the transition must be dictated by the department of education.
