| Téacs na hAchainí: | We are calling on the Irish Government to sign the Antarctic Treaty to demonstrate that Ireland is committed to preserving the beautiful continent of Antarctica for peaceful purposes and to join with the existing 53 member Countries representing over 80% of the world’s population supporting the Antarctic Treaty.
We feel it is only right that we should honour the numerous Irish Antarctic Explorers by acceding to the Antarctic Treaty.One of the first people to sight Antarctica in 1820 was a Cork man Edward Bransfield. In particular as 2016 is the 100th anniversary of the rescue of the men from the Endurance Expedition in which Irishmen Tom Crean from Annascaul, Co. Kerry, Ernest Shackleton from Kilkea, Co. Kildare & Timothy McCarthy from Kinsale, Co, Cork played such a vital role it is the best time ever to join and especially as it will coincide with many other 1916 centennial events.
The main purpose of the Antarctic Treaty, which was signed in Washington on December 1, 1959, is to ensure "in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord."
The treaty remains in force indefinitely. The success of the treaty has been the growth in membership which currently stands at 53. Iceland was the last country to accede to the treaty on October 13th 2015.
Please let's make Ireland the 54th Country!
