Téacs na hAchainí:Ireland led the way with the workplace smoking ban. It has saved many lives here since its introduction and many more saved, when similar measures were adopted elsewhere . We could keep Ireland to the forefront of children's health protection if the Oireachtas took the lead from the Tasmanian Parliament, who are in the process of introducing a Tobacco Free Generation. They are very serious at protecting their children's health and have, in recent years, brought in legislation to protect children from tobacco smoke in many areas such as bus shelters, outdoor dining areas and sporting events. They now intend, by means of a rolling ban, to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after the 1st of January of the year 2000. It is expected to be rolled out by updating the legislation each year to protect them at least up to 25 years old and perhaps thereafter for the rest of their lives. While it doesn’t make it illegal for them to smoke it makes it illegal to sell them tobacco products. In this way tobacco smoking will soon become a thing of the past, at least it will in Tasmania. The issue of protecting children’s health is of great importance and if discussed in the Irish Parliament and if a similar ban to the Tasmanian one were proposed, it should get great support from all political parties and independent members in both houses: not to mention countless lives that would be saved as a result.
